Woman rescued after hour and a half in Chattahoochee River

HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

A woman is safe after spending more than an hour in the Chattahoochee River early Monday morning.

Linda Cherry donned a life vest and attempted to swim to the Gordon boat landing after the boat she and her husband were on malfunctioned.

The Houston County Sheriff's Department received a call just after midnight that a woman had gone into the water. Houston Co. Rescue, Early Co. GA Sheriff's Department and air support from Dale Co. responded to the scene.

Authorities say that currents swept Cherry away from the landing and she became disoriented. She was spotted by air an hour and a half after going into the water and was recovered safely.

Captain Antonio Gonzalez of the Houston County Sheriff's Department says this was, "a bad situation that ended up well."

Even if boaters find themselves stranded, Captain Gonzalez says, "the boat is the safest place to be...getting out of the boat is the number one thing that you do not want to do."

Captain Gonzalez also says that it's important for boaters who go out at night to make sure that their vessels have proper lighting. All rules and laws apply to boating regardless of what time they are on the water.
