CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

No matter your skin tone, dermatologists say the best protection against the sun is putting on sunscreen, whether you're outside for 30 minutes or three hours.

When you go to the store, there are a lot of sunscreen options with different SPF numbers.

SPF is a number that tells you what percentage of UV-B rays are being blocked, although no sunscreen can offer total protection.

"What you really need to look for is something that's broad spectrum," said dermatologist Dr. Charles Moon. "So look for one that says broad spectrum protection. Look for one with a SPF of 30 or higher."

Also, what sunscreen you use depends on what you're doing outside.

If you're sitting at a ball game, you may not need to apply as often.

However, if you're swimming or doing physical activity, you'll want to use a sunscreen that's waterproof.
