Summer Survival: Booking your vacation

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

This time of year, you'll see a lot of resorts advertising last minute vacation deals, but that's not the best way to save money on vacation.

That's not to say you can't get a good deal, but the best way to save some cash is to book in advance.

If you want to save that perfect spot at Gulf Shores, for example, the best time to make that reservation for next summer, is right now.

Not only will it be cheaper, but you'll be able to get the amenities you want as well.

"If you book today for next year, which we've already been doing for months, and the rate goes down, most likely we'll be able to get you that lower rate so there's not a lot of risk," said Shari Elfrink of 1st Class Travel in Cape Girardeau.   "If you have someone who needs an accessible cabin, a larger family, or you want adjoining rooms, you really need to look at that and book early."

Finally, if you're going to book last minute, it doesn't literally mean last minute.

Last minute deals can usually be had maybe a month in advance.  If you try to book a week before, especially during a peak travel time, don't expect to get a great deal.
