DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The Dothan Police Department's parking lot was briefly evacuated Wednesday morning as a precaution after a man brought a bag with white powder to the station to have it checked out.

Authorities say the man found an envelope in his yard Tuesday that contained a white powder substance. The man is said to have torn the envelope open before bringing it inside his home.

The substance seemed to have irritated the man's eyes and nose so he made the decision to take it to the police department Wednesday to have it examined.

Authorities say the man was in the parking lot, so that area was evacuated while the fire department and a HAZMAT unit investigated the substance before giving the all-clear.

HAZMAT officials say they don't feel the substance was of any danger, but they have not released info on exactly what it was.
