DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

A legendary event makes its way back into Du Quoin after a 13 year absence.

The Car Craft Street Machine Nationals features hundreds of classic cars but has a history of creating a mess for the city. The event is June 28 to 30.

"It got to be a crazy time, it was out of control really," said car enthusiast James Smith.

Known for its hardcore horsepower, cool classic cars with plenty of big block engines, the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals brings out the biggest car enthusiasts.

"It's just a really good time to see all of the cars, thousands and thousands of cars gather in one area, it's just hard to believe," said Smith.

But police say it also brings out the biggest problems the city has ever had to deal with, from drunken tirades to property destruction and public nudity.

"There was a lot of crime there was a lot of violence," said Du Quoin Mayor Rex Duncan.

Mayor Rex Duncan says this year the city is hoping to change all of that by enforcing a zero tolerance policy.

"If that kind of behavior breaks out, it's going to be dealt with very quickly," he said.

The city has installed a new set of rules, like no glass bottles, designated camping areas, and no cruising.

"We are pulling troopers from numerous other districts to kind of up our presence in the area and make sure that is happening for us," said Illinois State Police Trooper Joey Watson.

City leaders say it will turn the three-day event into a more family oriented setting.

"Folks coming in to Du Quoin, we encourage them to do it, we want them to go out to the fair grounds and have a great time, come and visit our town, but we expect a certain level of civility," said Mayor Duncan.
