MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Nothing you do will change. Everything the city does will.

"You put all garbage in your green can and roll it to the street. It gets picked up by our sanitation department" says Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.

Trucks then take it to a new facility--near the current landfill--where a conveyor belt separates trash from glass, plastics, newspapers and aluminum.

"Our obligation is to deliver 100,000 tons," adds Strange.

A private company called I-energy will operate the facility charging the city $28 dollars per ton of garbage.

And now that the dotted line is signed, the company's owner "anticipates trying to get under construction in early July," adds Mayor Strange.

The goal is to open it sometime next summer.

WSFA 12 News contacted the Florida based company.

The owner says "we are pleased to announce that we have closed on the sale of bonds for funding the new leading edge recycling facility for the Montgomery community. We are excited about moving forward with the city to deliver this exciting and innovative project."

The mayor is confident this program will reduce the amount of trash going to the city's landfill, extending its life by many years.

"We want to be able to recycle. We want to be a green city. We want to be on the leading edge of this."

This technology will be the first of its kind in the country.

Because the site for the new facility provides enough dirt for construction, the company agreed to pay $1-million dollars to the city.

The mayor says that money will go straight to capital projects and not in the general fund.
