BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

An elderly pet owner died last week and now his neighbors and friends say they're getting the run around when they try to get help for his two dogs.

"We've been trying to call the humane society and they haven't come out here," said Chris Lisenby.

Lisenby says he used to live with the dog owner. He says last Friday the man died and left behind the two dogs that he cherished.

Lisenby isn't the only one expressing concern.

"I mean three people has called the humane society and they send you to 911 and then give you another number. But these dogs should have been picked up by now," said Lisenby. "The police came out here and said they were going to call and they haven't called."

After speaking with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and a Birmingham Police detective, FOX6 News has learned that in a case like this, pets can't simply be rescued by neighbors.

A police report must be filed and an officer must accompany a BirminghamJefferson County Animal Control officer to get the dogs. The animals will then be cared for and evaluated by the BJCA.

Detective Dunning with Birmingham Police Department says she will look into this case and visit the animals in the coming days.
