Metropolis church struck by disaster for the second time

Posted: Updated:

The powerful storms on Monday afternoon left behind much more then flooded out roadways and downed trees. They also leveled a church in Metropolis that was under construction.

The Upper Salem Baptist Church was destroyed by a fire on May 12, 2012. That Summer the congregation merged with nearby Weaver Creek Baptist Church.

The two churches were working to rebuild the old church that had stood since 1853.

But, the wood framework was no match for the winds on Monday afternoon.

"The first thought that came to my mind was on no why," said Weaver Creek Baptist Pastor Shawn Vandergriff. "And you mind wants to ask why, and how and all these different things that we may never know. But we have to focus on what we do know. And that is that God is still in control. And we do know that God is still with us. And that his will hasn't changed, he hasn't changed. And what he calls us to do hasn't changed."

Pastor Vandergriff says they've pick up their hammers and saws again to begin raising their church for a third time.

"The Lord is so good and so gracious. We've already had the outreach of several individuals and churches, that said they'd come along beside us and do anything they could to help us."

The church is going to need a lot of that help because they didn't have any insurance on their building that was under construction.

They're now accepting donations to help rebuild, and they're hoping to be able to save some of the lumber from the destroyed church.
