SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

A soldier from Smyrna has been awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received while serving in Iraq.

In 2009, Sgt. James Schrier was on his second deployment to Iraq when his convoy turned down a street that was suddenly crowded with people.

A grenade with armor-piercing brass was thrown at his vehicle.

"What I remember from the moment is my window in front of me turning white. And the next thing I know, I was laying on my side in the truck in front of my gunner. My driver was trying to kick me backwards, and my gunner was kicking me to see if I was all right at the same time," Schrier said.

At first, Schrier didn't seem to be badly hurt, but a day later, he started getting headaches that wouldn't go away.

He said it took doctors a while to diagnosis him with a traumatic brain injury, and he finally got treatment at the VA Hospital in Nashville.

Schrier said he hopes the diagnosis and Purple Heart will help others get treatment, too.

"Thankful that it's actually recognized, and I hope that other people that have gone through what I have gone through can get what they deserve, too," he said.

Schrier is with an Army National Guard unit based out of Dickson. He was presented with the Purple Heart during a ceremony last week.
