Child, 5, dies after being struck by pickup truck

MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A 5-year-old died Friday after being struck by a pickup truck that was backing up from a long driveway, according to Mount Juliet police.

The accident occurred at a property in the 500 block of Main Street near East Division Street around 10:30 a.m.

Investigators said the driver of the truck, 73-year-old Jimmy Allmon who is a friend of the family, did not see 5-year-old Ethan Page run behind the vehicle.

Officers said there was a cancer benefit being set up at the property before Page was hit.

Page was transported to Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital, but later died.

Investigators said no charges would be filed.

"This is a sad day in our community," said Chief James Hambrick of the Mount Juliet Police Department. "Our thoughts, our prayers go out to the family, to the friends, to our emergency responders."

"The vehicle that struck the child is an F250," added Sgt. Tyler Chandler. "Its body is raised up. Obviously your vision is compromised, especially low to the ground where a 5-year-old may be playing. It's a clear reminder everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings because you never know when a child may run out behind you."
