Gov. Deval Patrick urges Western Mass to vote on Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

With just three days left before the U.S. Senate special election, the leader of the Commonwealth stopped in Western Massachusetts, urging residents to get out and vote.

"If you care about good government, you have to care about elections," Gov. Deval Patrick told the crowd of Rep. Ed Markey supporters on Saturday morning.

Patrick later told CBS 3 that he cannot worry about this week's estimates of a low voter turnout.

"I am making no predictions," Patrick stated. "I believe we get the government we deserve. If people want good government, they have to show up for it. They have to come out and work for it."

Markey supporters in Western Mass have had weekly rallies of late with prominent members of the Democratic party. Over the last two weeks, Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren have each spoken with supporters in the Pioneer Valley. The governor said that attention is part of an overall strategy.

"We have had a lot of folks who have run for statewide office who have not paid attention to Western Massachusetts," Patrick said. "Ed is organizing and campaigning everywhere because he sees the whole state."

Patrick also echoed the recent Democratic sentiment that they are not taking any election for granted. He said his party learned a lot from the 2010 special election that saw Republican Scott Brown win the U.S. Senate seat.

"Not having someone charm their way into office, then vote against the interest of the people of the Commonwealth time after time," Patrick said. "That is what we got before, and we are alert not to let that happen again."

As for Gabriel Gomez, the Republican candidate will be in Western Mass on Sunday.

He has stops planned in Chicopee, Springfield and Agawam.
