CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Downtown Cape Girardeau is about to double as pit road as the Great Race rolls in Tuesday night.

About 100 antique cars rolled down Broadway and Main St. starting around 5 p.m.

The cars will stay parked on Main St. until 8:30 p.m. so people can look at the cars and visit with the participating drivers.

One couple drove from Poplar Bluff to attend the race and say they are excited to see the variety of cars roll through town.

"I love the old cars," Lucky Kirby said. "I've had old cars. I still have old cars and I just to see them still maneuvering and running as good as they do. Making a trip like this and staying together is just remarkable. So, the town should be very very privileged that they have the honor to welcome them to Cape Girardeau."

Local business owners are also excited about the big event. Lee Schlitt is the owner of Broadway Prescription Shop and Pharmacy and says the race is playing a role in revitalizing the downtown area.

“This is the 700 block and there’s a building behind me that they’re renovating right now and some other places that are getting spruced up," Schlitt said. "It’s nice to see some new businesses come and in it’s a good event to bring more people down here.”

Tuesday is day four of the Great Race, and drivers will start their day in Hannibal, MO before finishing in Cape.

The race is a nine day trek that covers ten states and 2,100 miles of road.

Instead of the race being decided on speed, the drivers are judged on precision.

The drivers are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized if they don't arrive at exactly the right time.

And besides being down to the second, sometimes it's tough for this cars to make it to the finish line at all, as most of the cars that will come downtown Tuesday night were built before World War II.
