CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

This is the time of year that many families go on vacation.

And unfortunately, being on vacation can lead to crime if you don't take certain precautions.

Most families don't think about that because they're so excited about vacation, but here are some tips to keep your home safe while you're away at the beach.

First, make sure your house looks lived in and not empty.  Burglars will look for houses that look like no one is home.

Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your house while you're away.  Leave your vacation address and phone number of the hotel with them so they can call you in an emergency.

Make sure you have timers for lights, the TV, or radios so they'll turn on and off at the right time.

Put your valuables that you can't live without in a safety deposit box while you're gone.

And finally, call local police and let them know that you'll be on vacation so they can look for anything out of the ordinary while they're on patrol.

Tips on making your house lived in include having someone mow the grass, and leaving a car parked outside so it looks like someone is home.
