LAVERGNE, TN (WSMV) -

A La Vergne family is forced to say goodbye to their son, whose life ended too young. Police say 22-year-old Murad Abulola was at his home on Mable Drive, when he was shot and killed June 27.

Wendill Matthew Ford, 19, is charged with homicide, unlawful possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence in the death of Abulola. Paramedics worked on the victim, but he died at the scene.

Detectives said calls to police about suspicious activity led them to the arrest.

Murad Abulola's mother, Martina Short, said everyone called her son Rod. She said she is grateful for all the work the La Vergne Police did to track down his accused killer, still it doesn't bring her son back.

"I had him in my arms and I said Roddy, Roddy wake up baby wake up, and he didn't move at all. His eyes were closed and I started freaking out," Short said.

Short said a friend first found her son on their front lawn. She said a neighbor performed CPR. But not long after she arrived at the hospital, Short said she learned her son had passed away.

"What makes me the saddest, is the course of his life being cut short, but the grandchildren that I will never get to see or meet, and a daughter-in-law that I will never gain," Short said.

Short said her focus now is on her son's funeral, an expense she never expected to have to face. A fund has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. Donations can be made at any First Tennessee bank.

Meanwhile, Wendill Ford remains behind bars without bond. His first court appearance is set for early next week.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and more possible charges could follow.
