CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Fourth of July is approaching and we wanted to share a recipe from a Heartland Cook who is patriotic year round. Chelsea Gilman of Jackson, Missouri is the wife of a soldier. Her husband, Specialist John Gilman, recently returned to the Heartland after a year-long deployment in Afghanistan with 1138th Engineer Company. One of the things John missed about the States (in addition to his wife and a newborn baby boy he hadn't yet met, of course!) was Chelsea's homemade pizza. Chelsea says friends and family rave over this thick-crust pie, and it's always brought everyone together.

Ingredients (Dough):

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 3 Tablespoons oil

Toppings (Optional):

  • BBQ sauce
  • Italian cheese
  • Grilled chicken
  • Red onion (diced)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix flour, sugar, salt, and dry yeast in bowl. Mix in water and oil. Knead the dough with your hands five times and drop dough on a floured surface. Roll out your dough to desired shape. Chelsea says rolling the dough takes time, so don't rush it!

Flour your Pizza pan and lay the dough out on it. Next add your favorite toppings. Chelsea prefers to make her pizza with BBQ sauce, grilled BBQ chicken, red onion and Italian cheese.

Brush oil around the edge of the crust to crisp it up. Bake 18-22 minutes or until crust is light brown on edges. Cut into slices and enjoy!

If you have a recipe you'd like to show off, we want to hear from you! Send Carly or Jaime an e-mail. You share the recipe and we'll do the cooking!

We are probably all guilty of not being about to put down the phone. And with kids getting their hands on them younger and younger, it is raising the concern of the health risks.  A recent survey by common sense media found nearly half of parents worry that their child is addiction to their cell phone. Mom Jackie Collins often worries about the amount of time her kids are spending glued to their phone. For her teenage son, it's almost like a full time job. "50 hours tot...
