WARE, IL (KFVS) -

An Anna woman is accused of kidnapping a newborn baby, and now an acquaintance is speaking out.

An Illinois woman says she knew the suspect, Karen Nichols, a little too well.

The state's attorney in Union County says Nichols, also known as Karen Casper, is facing armed robbery and kidnapping charges.

Nichols is Jessica Hurd's ex-fiancés mother, and her son's grandmother.

Hurd says that Nichols was "obsessed with having a baby."

Hurd says she's glad the baby is back with its mother and thankful this did not happen to her child.

"When I found out about it, I was upset," said Hurd. "That could have been my son. It kind of scared me. But I knew she probably wouldn't try to attempt that with my son, but there was always that in the back of my head that, you know, she could have done it if she wanted to."

Hurd says that her sister is expecting a baby in August and had been talking with Nichols about meeting up to exchange some baby clothes.

Hurd also says her sister is also glad this didn't happen to her soon to be newborn.

Nichols was taken to the Jackson County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The state's attorney says formal charges will be filed Monday morning.  Nichols is due in court Tuesday at 9 a.m.
