UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Bill McHughes says what allegedly happened to his granddaughter and her child is a nightmare.

"The baby was three days old and I was sitting here at the house when my phone rang and my daughter," McHughes said. "She was hysterical. I kept telling her, 'I can't understand you. Calm down, calm down. What's going on?' She says they stole the baby."

Karen Nichols is charged with armed robbery and kidnapping. Police and prosecutors are still investigating but McHughes says Nichols claimed she was a part of an organization that helps young mothers. McHughes says Nichols told the baby's mother she would take her shopping for items for the baby. McHughes says the mother and Nichols met in Johnston City where the mother and the child got in the car with Nichols. McHughes says Nichols drove the car around for several hours before stopping just outside Cobden.

"She pulled off the side of the road, pointed a gun at her and a knife and said, 'Get out of the car or I'll kill you and the baby,' took Lindsey, and some kind of scarf," McHughes said. "She tied Lindsey's hands behind her back, took her out into the field, taped her ankles together and put tape over her mouth and told her if she tried to get away too soon she'd kill the baby."

McHughes says Nichols took the baby back to her home in rural Anna while the baby's mother managed to untie herself and run for help.

According to the Union County Sheriff's Department, deputies arrested Nichols at her home on Hughey Lane and returned the baby to his mother the same evening.

Nichols' neighbors also spoke with Heartland News Monday. Several say Nichols had been claiming to be pregnant. However, they say they are questioning whether or not that is true.

Jessica Hurd is Nichols' son's ex-fiance. She says Nichols claimed to be due on July 4.

"She (Nichols) only had two ultrasounds that she had shown me and the ultrasounds did not have her name or her information on them," Hurd said.

Nichols will appear in court Tuesday morning.
