Coal miner killed in Saline County identified

ELDORADO, IL (KFVS) -

Peabody Energy has identified the miner killed in an accident Tuesday at the Wildcat Hills Mine near Eldorado.

Nathan Clarida, 35, of Galatia, Ill. was hit by a ram car that was being trammed through a ventilation curtain around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Amy Louviere with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Saline County Central Dispatch received a call of a mine accident at 12:17 p.m. Tuesday.

Clarida was pronounced dead at the mine at 2:14 p.m., according to the Saline County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy revealed cause of death to be blunt force trauma, according to the coroner's office.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia.

MSHA has issued a closure order and will conduct an investigation.

Beth Sutton, the Vice President of Communication and Community Relations for Peabody Energy released the following statement.

"A 35-year-old employee at the Wildcat Hills underground mine in Illinois was fatally injured today as the result of a coal haulage incident. The mine has been idled pending investigation, and appropriate officials with the state and federal government have been notified.

Wildcat Hills deeply mourns the loss of a fellow employee, and expresses its sympathies to family members, coworkers and friends."
