WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Investigators in Williamson County say they are struggling to keep up with the rising number of car thefts.

Police say the thieves head out, hit multiple homes in a night, and then take off without a trace.

The countywide problem is one that is troubling for investigators, and scary for the folks living here.

"They just load everything they can find," said Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick.

Vick says it is all too easy for a group of thieves targeting certain folks within the county.

"Tools, four wheelers, lawn mowers, anything they will fit on the truck," Vick said.

A detached garage, with keys left inside the truck and they have their next target.

"Opening the garage doors, loading stuff up and getting away without anyone ever hearing them."

Allen Shelton is no exception.

His truck was not stolen but that doesn't mean the thieves didn't leave their mark just last week.

"They bent the door of the truck and the roof," said Shelton.

Shelton says that with this close call he's not taking any more chances.

"I even secured a security light in my backyard," he said.

Investigators are having a tough time finding the suspects because the vehicles are dumped and the thieves are taking off with the stolen goods.

"We found some in Williamson County, we found some in the Metro East area," said Vick

It leaves investigators frustrated and with little to go on to catch the crooks.

"Each time they do it they will break in from two to eight, I think is the most we have had," said Vick.

All of the burglaries are taking place between 1-3 a.m.

If you see anything suspicious, call police.
