As the vote for a casino in Springfield approaches, opponents and supporters were making a final push Monday.
The Council of Churches of Western Massachusetts held a meeting to again voice their opposition to a casino being built in Springfield, or anywhere in the western part of the state. Aside from the moral argument, the council said MGM was providing false hope for the poor and would not provide a benefit to the city.
MGM held a conference with the local chapter of the NAACP at Springfield Technical Community College to talk about their commitment to using minority owned vendors and suppliers, if their proposal for a casino is accepted.
If the residents of Springfield accept the casino at the polls on July 16, that doesn't mean MGM can start building. The state gaming commission would still have to decide which of the competing communities would get the solitary license being issued.
The Council of Churches planned another casino protest in Court Square at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
