Sikeston church shares bounty of community garden

Posted: Updated:

Many people get to know each other better over dinner, and one Sikeston Church is using that concept to reach out to the community.

The Tanner Street Church of God members are sharing the bounty of their garden with the community. This is the second year for the garden.  The church wanted to put an empty lot to good use. A dozen families, YMCA volunteers and even local ambulance service employees chipped in and started growing produce the for area. The reaction from the community is huge.

"We have one lady that is around the corner, she wept," explained volunteer leader Dave Warren.  "She loved green beans, we happened to be picking green beans that day and we took her a sack full of green beans. She was so thankful to get them, she thanked us over and over and tried to give us money for them. We said no no no this is just our gift to you and we hope you enjoy them."

Already this year, organizer say they've given out 20 bushels of fresh corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and much more. Volunteers say they plan to keep growing and giving away the produce as long as the empty lot is available.
