Dump truck operator causes havoc in Northland neighborhood

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A dump truck that careened out of control caused havoc in a Northland neighborhood.

Two girls were checked out by paramedics after utility lines came crashing down. A cable line landed in an above-ground pool where the two girls were. A third child was in the yard. All the children will be OK.

The dump truck driver was also being checked out.

Kansas City police confirmed Tuesday afternoon that they are in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Northwest 70th Street investigating.

Two residents told KCTV5 that the dump truck operator drove through the neighborhood with the bed up, causing multiple power lines to be knocked down.

Fence lines and two sheds were smashed, residents said.

The driver fled the scene in the dump truck, the residents said. Chopper5 video of the dump truck showed it had markings for a private company on it.

But Sean Demory, spokesman for Kansas City, said the driver, a contractor for the city, did not flee the scene. He said the driver was part of crews doing street repaving, and the driver forgot to put the bed down.

Chopper5 video and photos from KCTV5 reporter Dave Jordan show multiple snapped power poles and downed lines.

Kansas City police said the driver was taken into custody at 68th and Hickory streets for questioning. The driver suffered some sort of injuries and police said they requested an ambulance for him.

Demory said the driver returned to the scene once he realized what he had done.

Steve Bode said power lines are down throughout yards and the street. He said the neighborhood "looks like a war zone."

Chopper5 showed Kansas City Power and Light utility crews working feverishly to restore power and make the necessary repairs.
