Meridian school has 3 options for dealing with black mold

MOUNDS, IL (KFVS) -

At the end of May, cleaning crews found mold in the walls of Meridian Elementary School.

The mold problem in the Meridian Elementary School is throughout the building on the inside of the outer walls of the building.

It is black mold growing in the walls which is very toxic to humans and in some cases can even cause death.

Fixing the problem could cost the school district millions of dollars. That's money they don't have.

Meridian School District Superintendent Terry Moreland has retired, but Meridian Elementary Principal Brent Boren says the school is calling in an architecture firm to give the school three appraisals on fixing the mold problem.

Boren says they have three options.

Option #1 is renovating and removal off all mold and contaminated surfaces in the existing building.

Option #2 is adding on to the existing high school building to accommodate the elementary school students.

Option #3 is knocking down the old existing elementary school building and building a new one.

There is no new meeting scheduled to discuss the mold issue. The school board is scheduled to meet again on July 16 for a regularly board meeting.
