97-year-old in Sikeston has book published

Posted: Updated:
SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

A 97-year-old woman in Sikeston recently had her book published, a life-long dream.

Luella Duncan grew up on a farm in Stoddard County. She spent part of her life on a farm before getting married and moving to Kennett. Through all the years, she never gave up her love of writing.

Now, she lives at West Ridge Place in Sikeston, and she decided to sit down and write a book about her childhood in the Heartland.

“All my life I have tried to write something,” she said. “As a teenager, I was always writing something and I would send it away to some magazine and they would return it, rejected.”

Duncan said it never discouraged her.

“I would think well, they just don’t know,” she said. “I would just send it someplace else. So, I kept writing and sending, writing and sending, and so finally I wrote this book.”

She told us how it felt when she learned her book would be published.

“Oh, it was a thrill,” she said. “It wasn’t that I was so surprised. I thought, finally they know, and it was thrilling.”

Duncan has other hobbies like painting. In fact, she also painted the cover of her book.
