CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says Illinois new concealed carry law is a step in the right direction for the state.

Gov. Nixon spoke at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau Wednesday afternoon, and said that he's happy the new law in Illinois will allow people with Missouri permits to carry across the river.

"We've been much further ahead in 2nd Amendment rights over the years," Nixon said.  "When I was attorney general, I supported the U.S. Supreme Court case to elevate the rights of the 2nd Amendment. I think having a system that allows folks who want to have the proper training and carry concealed on both sides of the river is a good step forward for the Heartland."

During his visit to Cape Girardeau, Nixon also said he doesn't see the need for a special legislative session this year.
