EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) -

Police in East Prairie are investigating a possible animal abuse and neglect case.

Officers removed 18 dogs from a building on South Martin Street Tuesday night and took them to the city dog pound. The East Prairie police chief says the conditions were not fit for animals.

One local woman says when her dog went missing, her son went into the building to look for him. She says he was shocked at what he saw.

"He went into the place and he said there were animals everywhere and urine all over the floor," Sharon Baker said, "He said it smelled so bad that you couldn't stand it. He checked every spot up in there. It was bad."

The people who were living in the building and keeping the animals there say they were trying to help the animals. They claim they were taking care of animals that were neglected.

The police chief says the dogs will be kept in the pound for five days. He says they will be given back to the previous owners only if living conditions improve.
