STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Some credit the work of dispatchers across the country with giving the right instructions to expecting mothers and leading to a successful birth.

At the Stoddard County Ambulance District in Dexter, dispatchers say it's about four or five phone calls a month from pregnant women looking for help over the phone.

All the dispatchers are EMD trained, meaning they can assist in a situation where a women may be giving birth to a child.

The dispatchers tell me the most important thing you can do in that situation is remain as calm as possible and listen to what they are telling you.

"It is the mindset you get when you walk through the door every day," said Brittany Thrower, a dispatcher. "You have to be mentally prepared for the worst and know that anything can be throw at you anytime."

"I think the EMD itself it offers assistance," said David Cooper with the Stoddard County Ambulance District. "It helps calm the patient down and there's somebody there even though its on the phone, its somebody offering instructions, guidance and advice before the ambulance gets there."
