Motorist killed after car hits tractor on highway

BENTON, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in southern Illinois' Franklin County say a motorist died when his car hit an oncoming tractor, causing a chain-reaction wreck that injured two people.

Coroner Marty Leffler tells the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan that 50-year-old Lavern Johnson of McLeansboro died in the accident Wednesday on Illinois 14.

Leffler says Johnson was eastbound when his vehicle hit the oncoming tractor. The coroner says another vehicle then hit the stopped tractor, Johnson's car and a pedestrian who had stopped to assist after the initial crash.

The pedestrian and driver of the second vehicle were taken to hospitals. Their medical statuses weren't immediately available.

Johnson's funeral arrangements are pending.
