AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Family members of Nic Shaffer, the autistic 12-year-old boy who was swept away by Mud Brook Creek, confirm that his body has been found.

Akron police say search crews located the body near Mud Creek in Akron at 11:21 a.m. Sunday.

The search for Nic Shaffer began on Thursday, July 18, after he fell into the flood-swollen creek near the Timbertop Apartments. The creek leads to the Cuyahoga River. Shaffer's mother tried to pull her son out, but was unable to do so.

Dive teams searched the area for hours on Thursday night without any luck, and called the search off around 9:30 p.m.

Nic Schaffer's family released the following statement:

"We would like to thank the men and women who have participated in the search and rescue effort. We are currently gathered together with family and friends and are hoping and praying for a miracle. We have been humbled by the offers for help we have received from family, friends and strangers. We have set up a fund to help with expenses we are likely to deal with in the future. We are praying we can use the fund to guarantee Nic's recovery from this ordeal; but, we are also preparing for the worst. The fund is called the Nic Shaffer Benefit account, donations may be made at any branch of Fifth Third bank, any donations would be greatly appreciated. God bless."
