Cates Landing, Mississippi River port, now open

Posted: Updated:

TIPTONVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The new Mississippi River port in northwest Tennessee is open for business.

The Union City Daily Messenger reported that Scott Sigman, the interim manager of Cates Landing, made that announcement Wednesday at a meeting of the Northwest Regional Port Authority in Tiptonville.

The port, near the Kentucky state line, still lacks a railroad link. The port authority is seeking a permit from the Federal Surface Transportation Board to build a rail line from the port to the CN tracks in Dyersburg.

Officials said it could take up to two years to realize the rail link.

The port is named for former U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Clifton Bledsoe Cates of Tiptonville.
