CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Jo Ann Emerson's replacement has now officially set up shop in Cape Girardeau.

Congressman Jason Smith today opened his Cape Girardeau office with a ribbon cutting and open house.

Smith commented about the farm bill approved by the U.S. House.

The measure focuses solely on farm programs and would delay, at least for now, efforts to overhaul the country's food-stamp program.

"When you look at the food stamp provision, it made up almost 80% of the funding of the farm bill," said Smith. "So, we need to be focusing on agriculture and not necessarily on entitlement programs."

Funding for food stamps was separated from the proposal.

Lawmakers will take it up later.

As for Smith, voters elected him shortly after Emerson resigned earlier this year.
