CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A Heartland couple says they are thankful things did end badly after someone tried to scam them.

Brenda Geyssens says she was trying to sell a leather jacket on Craigslist.

However, she wanted $200 for it and someone wrote her a check for $1,900.

Geyssens says it was too good to be true.

Geyssens says there were even more red flags than that.

She says the buyer didn't have a working phone number.

According to her, it was a real check that was stolen from another company.

Geyssens wants you to be aware of what happened to her so you can be prepared.

"My husband said, this is, this is a scam," said Brenda Geyssens. "And so we already thought that it was a scam because the guy had mentioned all the money that he was going to send. Why would someone want to send us extra money?"

Authorities tell us you always need to be aware and if something is too good to be true, like in this case it is.
