FREDERICKTOWN, MO (KFVS) -

A Fredericktown pastor facing assault and stalking charges has been asked to resign by the church board.

Carl Cureton, 69, is the senior pastor of Calvary Temple Church in Fredericktown.

He is charged with third degree assault and first offense stalking.

A woman contacted police claiming Cureton had grabbed her by the arms and kissed her on the mouth.

According to the probable cause statement, the woman told police she had been harassed by Cureton for two years. She said she was in a back room at her work when Cureton allegedly came in and started massaging her shoulders. He is accused of reaching around her and hugging her, then grabbing her and kissing her on the lips.

The six-member board all agreed to ask Cureton to resign.

According to the board, Pastor Cureton was “not forthcoming and consistent with statements to the board about the situation.”

He did not resign because of the allegations, but rather the board asked him to resign because he was not forthcoming with them about the situation.

"I am aware of the charges and am acting as quickly as possible to get things resolved," Cureton said. "I feel like I am being falsely accused and maintained my innocence of knowingly doing anything wrong to anyone."
