SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Scott County Sheriff's Department confirms crews have recovered the body of a male out of the Mississippi River.

No word on the identity of the person.

The Scott County coroner says an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Wayne and Lin Jones were fishing when they saw the body. Jones called 911 at about 10:30 Monday morning.

"We were fishing," Jones said. "We saw the body. we put the poles in and Wayne said 'We are going to go make sure it's a body' and as soon as we identified that, yes, it was a body, we called 9-11."

Jones says they were asked to stay with the body until law enforcement arrived.

"We kind of just kept following the body so they could find it and when they got over on shore they blinked their lights and asked if we could come over and pick up one of the men," Jones said.

The deputy tied a rope to the body and they pulled it to shore near the SEMO Port Authority near an old quarry, according to Jones.

The Jones say it's something they hope to never experience again.

"It just makes you sick to your stomach to find something like that," Jones said. "It's sad that something like that happened. It was just weird that we were there when it went by."
