CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Kiwanis Park will be filled with walkers and runners lacing up their sneakers in the annual Hoops for Life 5K event Saturday.

The annual run/walk event raises money for the pediatric brain tumor research program at Stanford University's children's hospital. That's where Shannon and Amy Aldridge of Cape Girardeau say their daughter Sahara received excellent care. Sadly, at just 13 years old, Sahara (whose nick-name was Hoops) lost her battle to a malignant brain tumor in 2007.

In 2010, her parents started the Hoops for Life event in her memory. Every year since the event's inception, thousands of dollars have been raised. Sahara's mom and dad hope their efforts and all those local dollars will help other families avoid the heartache they suffered.

"since we went through a tragedy, we're trying to do something with that tragedy to give back," said Sahara's father Shannon Aldridge. "Maybe come up with a cure for this thing to save other children."

Hoops for Life kicks off Friday night with a benefit show featuring Christian Comedienne Chonda Pierce. Pierce is the so called "queen of clean" in the comedy world and offers a girls' night of laughter. Pierce takes the stage at 7 p.m. Friday at Cape Central High School. Tickets are $20.

The annual 5K kicks off at Kiwanis Park at 8 a.m. Saturday. For more information on Hoops for Life click here.
