CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

An old disease that doctors and nurses had thought they had eliminated is back, and on the rise.

According to the Centers for Disease Control the number of reported cases so far this year of whooping cough nationwide is 18,000. That's two times more cases then where we were this time last year.

Now, students returning to school in Illinois are going to have to have the vaccination for the disease before they go to school.

The new requirement by the Illinois Department of Health is for kids going into the 6th through 12th grades.

"These students will have protection. And it will keep them from getting the pertussis virus," said Karen Brown Director of Nursing at Jackson County Health Department. "And they won't miss many weeks of school. It's highly contagious, like a cold."

Infants are normally vaccinated for the disease along with several other diseases when they're two months old, but over the years that protection diminishes and kids become more vulnerable to the disease.

"This can persist for weeks to months. The complications with the severe cough, it can cause spasms," Brown said. "People can have other complications to where their breathing is compromised."

The number of current cases of whooping cough in America are the highest they've been since 1959.
