New option for Harrisburg High School

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) -

Voters in Saline County voted no to a new Harrisburg high school, but the physical problems with the building still exist.

School leaders say the class of 2016 will be the last class able to go to school in the current building. The school does not meet safety standards.

Harrisburg School Board President Scott Berry has listed five options for future students at Harrisburg High School.

In a letter to the school board, the predicted last class to graduate from the building will likely be the class of 2016.

1. Deactivate Harrisburg High School: Change Harrisburg CUSD#3 to a K-8 School District. Our graduating 8th graders would receive a "tuition voucher" to be used at an area high school of their choice.

2. Dual Use of Harrisburg Middle School: Use our current middle school as both high school and middle school. High school students could attend in the mornings from 6:30 to 12:30 and middle school students in the afternoon from 1:00 to 7:00.

3. Portable Classroom Campus: set up a full high school campus of portable classrooms on property at the middle school.

4. Consolidation: To accomplish this, CUSD #3 and other districts would have to vote to combine. A new school would have to be built. This could not be accomplished within a three year period. This would also require a bond referendum to be passed.

5. From College Street to College Road: S.I.C. was once housed at H.H.S. Why no house H.H.S. at S.I.C?
