PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

There's a tiny insect that's really bugging some business owners near Perryville.

The USDA set a trap in an ash tree in Perryville City Park and found an emerald ash borer.

And that finding could lead to a countywide quarantine on firewood, which could hit hundreds of people in the pocket book.

"Perry County is probably one of the biggest firewood producing counties in Missouri," said Perry County Commissioner Patrick Heaps.

Heaps says the county is expected to fall under a quarantine for all firewood because of the borer.

"It's going to be devastating," he said.  "It depends on how things play out on this. We're going to do everything we can to try to help the situation, but it's probably going to be one thing that's going to happen."

The quarantine is in effect in eight counties including Carter, Shannon, Wayne, Reynolds, Madison, and Iron counties in the Heartland.

Perry County is expected to be added to that list very soon.

County economic development director Scott Sattler says the quarantine won't affect saw mills very much as only 3% of what they log is ash.

However, since the quarantine affects all firewood, even if it's not ash, those who ship wood or cut firewood as a side business will be hurt.

Heaps said a public meeting is in the works so people can learn more about the bug and its impact.
