(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Fire Department had to rescue a mother and her newborn baby after their car stalled in rising floodwater Thursday. The water was waist-high at Austin Peay and Coleman Road when the family was trapped.

Despite three-week-old precious cargo named Tevin, Memphis mother Casey Crowell thought she could navigate her Ford Taurus through flooded Coleman Road in Raleigh.

"I didn't realize it was that deep, and it was raining really hard ... And I was driving really slow," said Crowell.

She finally stalled out in the water.

"And then I called the fire department when the battery light came on," she said.

Staff and students inside The Hair Design School quickly put down their combs and clippers. They had seen this low-lying area outside flood before.

"Me and a couple of other students and our director noticed a car seat in the back. So we dialed for the fire department in [the school], didn't realize she was also on the phone with the fire department," said student Celeste Ousley.

Firefighters were able to free mom and baby before the salon staff gave them dry clothes and much needed comfort.

The mother said the baby was OK.

Crowell was not the only driver who misjudged flooded streets during Thursday's downpour, but it is something she never plans to do again.

People who live in this area and at Jackson Avenue and Macon Road, which also flooded, have complained before.

They would like something to be done before the next storm.
