Changes sought for unmarked vets graves in OH, KY

CINCINNATI (AP) - Supporters of historic cemeteries in Ohio and Kentucky want federal policy changed to make it easier to get markers and tombstones for veterans' unmarked graves.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that supporters want to change a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs policy. The policy now requires next-of-kin, persons authorized by the next-of-kin or someone authorized in writing by the deceased veteran for markers and tombstones for the graves. A national online petition also seeks the change.

An Ohio congressman's proposed legislation allows others to apply for markers for veterans. The proposal would allow anyone to apply for markers for veterans who served in the Armed Forces more than 62 years earlier. It also specifies eligible applicants for more recent veterans.

The VA National Cemetery Administration is reviewing the regulation.
