More men becoming victims of domestic violence

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A recent domestic dispute escalated very quickly as a Columbus woman reportedly ran over the father of her child while the child was in the car.

Experts claim men becoming victims of domestic violence is becoming more common.

According to www.helpguide.org, while the majority of domestic violence victims are women, the abuse of men happens far more often than you'd probably expect.

"Domestic violence in general, it can happen to anybody, anywhere," Hope Harbor Assistant Director Lindsey Reis says.

Reis explains they do see quite a few men seeking refuge from abusive spouses.

A 2005 Centers of Disease Control study reports 1 in 9 men in United States are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives.

Columbus' latest domestic violence incident landed a mother behind bars and a father fighting for his life.

Authorities tell us 22-year-old DeChara Williams intentionally ran over her 23-year-old boyfriend after the couple argued; investigators are still unsure what the pair was arguing over.

The victim suffered very serious injuries including multiple fractures, lacerations, contusions and severe trauma to his head and legs.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Another sad detail of this story: Williams had the couple's 3-year-old son inside the black Chevrolet Malibu when she ran over his father.

"Less than half of family violence or domestic violence incidents are reported," says Reis.

Helpguide.org reports men don't report abuse out of fear of embarrassment. Experts say an abused man also faces a shortage of resources, skepticism from police, and major legal obstacles.

The victim's condition is improving. He's currently listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

As for his girlfriend, she's scheduled to being charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and 2nd degree cruelty to children.
