From YMCA Montgomery:

Each summer, select students from youth government programs throughout the nation attend the YMCA's Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA) at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, N.C. During the week-long event, almost 600 delegates from more than 30 states debate a wide range of national and international issues. Prior to the conference, each student spends time researching, writing and preparing a proposal to present to the other delegates. Delegates rank the proposals to advance the students' ideas through three committees before a proposal can make it to the conference's General Assembly or Plenary sessions for a pass or fail vote. The 22 students from Alabama truly made their mark at the 2013 YMCA Conference on National Affairs, which concluded July 4.

2013 Alabama Youth Gov. Chad DuBois, a graduate of Montgomery's Catholic Preparatory School, served the conference as the Alabama representative on the Conference Life Committee, the governing board of the conference. DuBois' proposal repealing the ethanol mandate advanced to Second Committee. DuBois will attend Auburn University in the fall and study political Science. He is the son of Mike and Cindy DuBois.

Two Alabama Delegates had their proposal reach the Third Committee.  One was Jake Hemmings, a rising sophomore at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, and the Alabama delegation's youngest delegate, who proposed that all retailers, including those online, collect sales taxes. He is the son of John and Carrie Hemmings.

Other Montgomery teens who attended the conference were:

  • John Ahn, a rising senior at The Montgomery Academy and the son of Yeon Han and Jay Ahn.
  • Abigail Betts, a 2013 graduate of Trinity Presbyterian School who will be a freshman at the University of Montevallo in the fall. She is the daughter of Kelly and Todd Betts.
  • Youth Chief Justice Alex Castanza, a rising senior at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School and the son of Michael and Diane Castanza.

Zijie Yin, a 2013 graduate of Mountain Brook High School, was selected as one of six presiding officers for the 2014 YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs.  His exemplary leadership qualities means he will return to the conference in 2014 to preside and serve as a role model for the conference participants. He also served this summer's conference as a committee chairman. Yin's proposal to create a drug consumption facility advanced to the Third Committee. He is studying international political economy and minoring in international business diplomacy at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Yin is the son of Dingmin and Li Li.
