The coroner says the human remains found in rural St. Francois County on Thursday have been identified, and the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Coroner Jim Coplin says the adult human remains were found on a property Thursday morning in a septic tank off Highway K.

An autopsy on the remains started at 9:30 a.m. on Friday in Farmington.

Coplin says the remains are that of a man in his late 30s. His name is not being released, and authorities are in the process of notifying family.

He does say this is being investigated as a homicide.

There is no cause of death at this time. Coplin says further test will determine cause of death

According to the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, the remains were found shortly before noon on Thursday.

They say there were found and recovered from septic tank on unoccupied property in St. Francois County, northeast of Bonne Terre.

The sheriff's department said the discovery is the culmination of a seven month missing person investigation involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
