Elkville votes to keep Police Department

ELKVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

A local community looks at drastic measures in an effort to balance its budget.

At Thursday's city council meeting, members in Elkville looked at stripping the village's police department to make up for the shortfall in the budget.

The decision was brought to a vote after members heard from an outspoken crowd about the negatives of getting rid of the village's police force.

Council members voted 4-2 in favor of keeping the department.

The idea was first brought up a few weeks ago by the chairman of Elkville's financial department.

One option looked at cutting the department all together, which includes a police chief and one part time police officer.

The equipment would be then sold off-which would save about $90,000.

Another option would was to just have one part-time police officer staffed.

The Jackson County sheriffs officer would then cover the area.
