ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The remains of a man found in a St. Francois County septic tank on Thursday are that of 38-year-old Sam Francis of Cape Girardeau, according to Coroner Jim Coplin.

The coroner also says the death is being investigated as a homicide. St. Francois County authorities say Sam Francis was identified through dental records by a forensic pathologist.

Coplin says the adult human remains were found on a property Thursday morning in a septic tank off Highway K.

There is no cause of death at this time. Coplin says further test will determine cause of death.

According to the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, the remains were found shortly before noon on Thursday.

They say there were found and recovered from septic tank on unoccupied property in St. Francois County, northeast of Bonne Terre.

The sheriff's department said the discovery is the culmination of a seven month missing person investigation involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

He was last seen mid December 2012 and several different law enforcement agencies were looking for him.

One of Francis' close friends says his death leaves a hole in his life.

"To me, that was my brother," said Wes Bartles. "I wish he was my brother because I didn't know my real brother, and, we had our differences and we didn't, you know. It's just one of those things that sometimes you would think you have a brother that would take your back whether or not, you know?"

Bartels says the fact that Francis was found in a septic tank makes the news that much tougher to handle.

He says whoever did this is a sick person and says there won't be closure until the suspect is caught.

Funeral arrangements have been announced for Francis.

According to Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, Mo., visitation is Monday at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. for the public.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Morgan Funeral Home chapel.

The burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the funeral home says you can donate to the Sam Francis Educational Trust for Children Fund at 3130 Meyer Road in Festus, Missouri 63028.
