City leaders express optimism about future of Montgomery Mall site

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

As construction gets underway on a new public safety facility at the old Montgomery Mall, city leaders are optimistic about the future of the site and the surrounding area.

The 17,000 square foot facility is set to open later this year. Separately, the Montgomery Public Schools have announced plans to move LAMP into the old Parisian store space along with the consolidation of some office space at the mall.  The system had previously announced plans to build a technical school on the old JcPenney site.

"Anytime you can put three or four or five hundred people in there along with all the other students transacting business that is going to attract some other things," said Mayor Todd Strange.

Mayor Strange said the city will work on finishing the current projects and then consult with the developer on what else might go inside the old mall. Construction on the public safety facility should be complete in October.
