KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Jackson County prosecutors charged an Independence man with the Friday night murder of his mother.

Richard A. Ohearn, 58, faces second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

According to court records, Kansas City police were called to the home, located near East 46th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard, of Ohearn's mother, 78-year-old Nancy Ohearn, just after 10 p.m. Friday. They found her dead on the floor inside her home.

Nancy Ohearn had apparently died from a gunshot wound.

Richard Ohearn was at the scene, and a handgun and ammunition were found on the living room piano. When he was taken to police headquarters, he spontaneously uttered "I killed my mother didn't I?" and proceeded to apologize.

Prosecutors requested his bond be set at $500,000 cash.
