Southern Illinois business celebrates 60 years

VIENNA, IL (KFVS) -

It can be difficult for small businesses to stay open, especially in these tough economic times. But, one local business has figured it out.

Ned's Shed in Vienna is celebrating 60 years in business on Saturday.

One of the owners says the secret is in the relish. It's an old family recipe, one they told us, of course, they can't give out.

"Everybody seems to love the relish,” Kevin Breeden said. “We have people calling all the time. We give it away for Christmas to our family. It's been a big iconic part of Ned's since it opened. It's the relish."

Another owner says her lips are sealed.

"I got a message on Facebook and this sweet lady said “Can I get the recipe?’ I said ‘Sorry can't do it," Angie Breeden said.

Locals say they keep coming back for more than the relish.

"It's being original. It's not a fast food chain," said customer Dan Bailey. "It's hometown original and that's why it's a favorite."

Breeden says the restaurant has become a part of the community.

"Everybody loves Ned's Shed,” Breeden said. “People just love it as much as we do. They feel like it's part theirs’. It's been in the town so long.”

Another owner says it’s the community’s support that’s helped keep the doors open.

“You have to get people involved and get the local community, because you can't survive in a small business like this without that,” Ross Webb said.

Kevin and Angie Breeden and Ross and Eleida Webb bought Ned’s Shed in November of 2012. The restaurant was opened by Ross Webb's uncle in 1953. Kevin Breeden's grandmother was one of the cooks that helped figure out the secret relish recipe. Now, the restaurant is back in the family and still thriving.

Ned's Shed is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Coming up on Heartland News at 10:00, we'll have the story from the owners on their secret to keeping the doors open.
