Group tries to I.D. unmarked remains in southern Illinois cemetery

Posted: Updated:
HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

During the process of burying a young man in the Herrin Cemetery earlier this week, the crew dug up an old grave.

The sexton at the Herrin City Cemetery stopped as soon as he dug up the human remains in an area of the cemetery that was once a potter's field.

Professors from SIU, and Eastern Illinois University were called in to try to identify the person.

They were able to determine that it was a female between the ages of 20-40 who was buried in an unmarked grave, possibly in the 1920s.
