Jackson Schools preparing for new elementary school

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

While school districts across the Heartland gear-up for the start of the school year, the Jackson School District gets ready for a big change.

Construction on a new elementary school is expected to start soon, possibly by the end of the month.

Jackson superintendent Dr. Ron Anderson says this new construction will address a severe overcrowding issue in the district's elementary schools.

The construction site on North Lacey Street is ready to go, and Dr. Anderson says the school will hold kindergarten through fifth grades, as well as ten preschool classrooms.

The district says the recent addition to the high school solved overcrowding issues there, and that this new elementary school will do the same for younger classes.

Dr. Anderson says right now, every inch of the elementary schools are being used including closets, and the new school can't come soon enough.

"I think this is the last piece of our major construction projects we really needed," said Dr. Anderson. "The high school was the last one and this one will take care of the elementary for quite a while. So I think we'll be in good shape."

Construction bids will be presented to the school board on August 13.

Dr. Anderson says he expects a contractor to be chosen at that meeting with construction beginning shortly afterwards.

There's no timetable yet for completing the school.

Dr. Anderson says the district will have a better idea on a finishing date after the winter.
